MY HEALTH STORY, DAVID MACHELL

It was July 4, 2006 and I was bagpiping with the Saint Patrick’s Pipe Band of Glastonbury, CT when I noticed a heaviness in my legs. I was alarmed. When I stopped marching and played in place, I had difficulty starting to march again. Like walking on “tree trunks.”
I went to my family doctor and he sent me to a neurologist. The neurologist thought it was a disc in my neck and sent me to a surgeon-- so I had neck surgery, fusing two discs. That didn’t help. So, two more neurologists later, he came into the room and informed me I had ALS/Lou Gehrig’s Disease. When the doctor informed my wife and I, she started to cry, then I started to cry. After that we were numb.
By that time my speech was being effected, hard to make my speech clear. I tried to continue my teaching, one year then two years, but my speech didn’t allow me to continue. My mouth was not cooperating. As I tried school, I fatigued greatly. The students showed compassion and concern. I will always be grateful.
I had had symptoms two years at that time. No treatments, incurable. I had lost my first wife to ovarian cancer, so I knew these feelings once before.
After 6 years, my walking is gone and speech is very poor. The ALS MD specialist says I have “upper neuron” ALS which means I will probably live a normal lifespan, but greatly impaired. My teaching is gone and my mind is the same as before ALS, so I can think but not speak. A major adjustment!
I can blow my musical instruments, but my mouth is impaired, so tonguing and embouchure are gone. I still play on my native american flutes and pennywhistles and I can still play my electronic bagpipes.

Please support the research cause for ALS. It is a terrible disease.
Thank you and thank you for visiting my website.
